Juli’s Maternity Portraits at Alum Rock Park
This was the first time that Juli and her husband had taken portraits – since their marriage many years ago. Like many people, Juli and her husband felt awkward taking pictures. It can be uncomfortable, for a lot of people, to have a camera pointed at your face! I understand this feeling and so my main goal with all of my sessions is to create images that feel natural and unposed.
I have several locations that I love shooting at – but Alum Rock Park was special to Juli and her husband. They often hike in the hills of the park and it only made sense to have their maternity portraits at Alum Rock Park 🙂 It proved to be a great location.
Unposed, Natural Portraits
For maternity portraits, I usually start the same exact way. I get close up shots of your baby bump – that do not include your face. I explain that most of the poses will involve cupping the baby bump. Either with both hands on the bottom, or your hands on the top and bottom of your baby bump. I even demonstrate on my own baby bump! It’s something that I am working on getting rid of 🙂 but since I have a miniature baby bump, why not use it?!
I find that getting clients “warmed up,” with shots of just the baby bump and then following those up with walking shots makes the session easier to get into.
Giving You Space to Interact
I like giving you and your partner a little space to just interact in a natural way. The best images come out when you’re just being yourself and not focused on what I’m doing with the camera. Incorporating props, such as baby books, is an excellent way to do this as well.
The moments before your baby arrives is a special moment that should DEFINITELY be photographed. Creating fun, natural, and unposed images is s style that I find works well for everyone. Photography should never feel awkward and uncomfortable 🙂
If you have a special moment that deserves being photographed, I’d love to hear from you. The best way to reach me is through my contact form. Thanks!
