Fun, Natural Posing

Maternity portraits should be fun and feel natural. I start off all of my maternity sessions with shots of your baby bump. I find that this is a good way to start the session for two reasons. One, it takes the focus off of you and on to your baby bump. And secondly, it gets you familiar with how we will pose you for the majority of the shots.

After getting shots of your baby bump, we will look to get some shots of you and your partner interacting. Several of the shots will be of you guys walking and interacting with each other. I like to give you guys space to be yourselves and have fun with the poses.

Props

Using props are a creative way to make the session into your own. I encourage the use of 2-3 props – so that the entire session is not just of you and the props. I primarily want to focus on you interacting with your partner 🙂 Some common props that my past clients have used are baby shoes, framed sonograms, or a custom made banner. A great resource for a lot of these ideas is right off of Etsy.

Working With Kids

If you plan on incorporating kids into the session, one of the biggest tips that I would recommend is bringing along someone who can help watch them. Depending on your child, they may not have the attention span to last the entire 60 minutes. Having someone who can help keep them occupied, when they are not posing for certain pictures, can be really helpful. There are some other tips on working with kids on my blog.
