Prior to the Weynab’s lifestyle newborn session, I had the opportunity to work with Weynab and Colin on maternity portraits. It was a really fun session. When they filled out their pre-session questionnaire, the thing that they wanted to remember most about the session was the moments before their family went from 3 to 4. With the 4th member of the family finally here, we scheduled a really fun and cute lifestyle newborn session.

What is the Difference Between Lifestyle and Traditional Newborn Portraits?

One of the most important things to consider, when hiring a Photographer, is whether or not they specialize in the type of portraits you are looking to have taken. Some Photographers just do weddings and nothing else; some Photographers do a little bit of everything; and other Photographers steer clear of certain types of sessions.

Truth be told, “traditional” newborn portraits are VERY challenging. These are the types of sessions where it is just the baby, they are posed in all kinds of intricate poses, use a bunch of different props, and they spend 3, 4 or sometimes 5 hours to capture these images! This is not something that I specialize in; however, I LOVE “lifestyle” newborn sessions.

Lifestyle newborn sessions are focused on capturing moments of your family interacting with the baby in a natural setting. Usually at your home.

50/50 Posed and Candid

Even though the main focus of the session is to capture a lot of natural and unposed portraits, about half of the images are actually “posed.” For these images, I will typically use a white backdrop and a bean bag to pose the baby on.
