Maternity Portraits at Capitola Beach | Frederique & Denise

Frederique and Denise will be adding their third child to their family. With their previous two children, they decided to skip maternity portraits. With their third child, Frederique knew two things: she did not want to miss out on documenting this special time and she wanted to have the maternity portraits at Capitola Beach!

Natural and Unposed Images

My main goal for all of my sessions is to capture images that feel natural and unposed. I’m not looking for the perfect shot; and I don’t look to overly “Photoshop” the final images so that they look unnatural. I prefer natural, fun moments – especially with families. maternity portraits at capitola beachmaternity portraits at capitola beach

With Beach Sessions, Timing is Everything

One of the things to consider, when scheduling maternity portraits at Capitola Beach, is the timing of the session. In general, portraits in the middle of the day is not a great idea – because the lighting tends to be harsh and unflattering. And this is especially true at the beach – where there is no shade. Another great thing about having the session in the evening is that a lot of the beach crowd has gone home for the day and you don’t have to worry about it being too crowded. Most couples don’t want too many people around during their session 🙂

Bring a Couple of Props

For your session, I want the focus to be primarily on you and your family/partner. I encourage the use of props – but not too many! My two favorite props are baby shoes and sonograms. There are a lot of fun poses you can incorporate into the session 🙂 A great resource for maternity portrait props is Etsy. Remember – try to keep it to just a couple of props!
