Maternity Portraits at Asilomar State Beach | Sabrina & Raul
There are so many GREAT locations to take portraits, in the Bay Area! For some reason, I had never taken portraits at Asilomar State Beach. So when I got to this location for Sabrina & Raul’s maternity portraits, it was a pleasant surprise!
The Best Time For Outdoor Portraits
One of the questions I am always asked is: “what is the best time to take outdoor portraits?” In general, this is going to be either early in the morning (when the sun is rising), or in the evening (when the sun is setting). At these times of day, the sun is low in the sky and it creates soft, vibrant light – that is flattering for portraits. When the sun is high in the sky, the direction of the light creates very harsh lighting. You can still shoot portraits at these times, but the images will need to be taken where there is open shade. Most beaches do not have shade. So shooting the session in the evening is probably going to be the only time that you can schedule the session.
One of the great things that I liked about shooting Sabrina & Raul’s portraits at Asilomar State Beach was that it was a very overcast day.
PRO TIP:Overcast is also great for portraits because the lighting is very soft :)When it is overcast, shooting in the afternoon is a little more “doable,”
What Makes a GREAT photo?
To me, it is all about the expression of the people in the photos. My favorite images are those that look and feel natural and unposed. I want you to look at your maternity portraits and remember the day and how you had fun with your family. I don’t want you to look at the images and remember how the session was filled with overly posed, awkward moments. Maternity portraits should be fun. And a break from maternity classes, baby registries, and getting the babies room decorated!
If you are expecting a baby, I would LOVE to hear from you! The best way to reach out to me is through the contact form on my website. Thanks!
