So you’ve delivered the baby and it is time to bring them home. Now what?! Of course, it is time to take some pictures 🙂 Here are my top three pointers when scheduling a lifestyle newborn photography session.

Schedule The Session In The First Week

With newborns, timing is everything. The ideal time to schedule a lifestyle newborn photography session is in the first 3-7 days after the baby has arrived. During the first week, the baby spends most of the time sleeping – and this makes it easier to pose them. If you’re not feeling up to it, pushing the session out another week or so will be fine. Just keep in mind that it may be a little more difficult to keep them calm.

Pick A Couple of Outfits – But Don’t Go Crazy!

When posing newborns, I like to keep things as simple as possible. No frog poses, baby hammocks, or putting them inside of pumpkins. My main goal for lifestyle newborn sessions is to get a handful of simple poses of the baby alone, and some of Mom, Dad, and the rest of the family interacting with the baby. There are a bunch of places to find cute outfits for the baby. A popular resource for this is Etsy. They have really cute handmade outfits, baby wraps, bows, etc. Since I keep the session to just two hours, a couple of outfits should do the trick 😉

Get The Entire Family Involved

Last but not least, one of the most important things with lifestyle newborn portraits is to include the whole family. Getting natural, unposed photos of the baby and the family is what makes it a “lifestyle” newborn session. Simple poses such as holding the baby in their nursery or the living room, reading them a book, or laying on the bed together are all ideas of the types of images we would look to capture.
