Outdoor Maternity Portraits in San Jose | Liz, Alex, Mila
Whether you are expecting your first child – or you are having another child, capturing fun and candid images of this special time are very important. For Liz’s session, we chose to schedule outdoor maternity portraits in San Jose at the Municipal Rose Garden. It was a beautiful day and the roses and backgrounds complimented Liz’s outfit perfectly! Here are a handful of images from their session and some tips for capturing maternity portraits with little ones.
Practice Some Poses Before The Session
When working with kids, one of the best pointers I can recommend is building up excitement about the session. About one week before the session, start mentioning that you will be going to the park to have fun and take pictures. You can go over some of the poses where they are kissing the baby, or reading books to the baby; and we can use do these same poses during the session. If your child sees that you are excited about getting your pictures taken, they’ll also be excited.
Make Fun Plans After The Session
Another great way to build excitement around the session is to make plans after the session. Promise them that if they have fun and smile that you will take them to the park or for ice cream after the session. A little bribery goes a long way to make sure that they stay engaged during the session. Or at least for the parts where they will be in the pictures!
Bring Something or Someone To Keep Them Occupied
Since your child will not be in all of the pictures, bringing something that will keep them occupied is very important. If you are like most parents, your cell phone may suffice – but a few toys, books, or a game will work perfect. Another really great option that is even better than your phone or a toy is to bring someone to help watch them. Not only can they keep them busy while they are not in the images – but they can stand really close to me to help grab their attention!
Make Sure To Include Images of Just Them
When working with kids, it is important to understand that they can be unpredictable at times! Some kids start the session off REALLY good and are all smiles. And then part way through, they are completely done! Other kids take a lot of time to warm up to the session. I find that encouraging them and letting them know that they are doing such a good job will keep them engaged and interested in the session. Spending 5-10 minutes of the session where we just focus on them being silly and having fun is important. Often times, after we take this approach they are more inclined to do some of the other cute poses that you had in mind 🙂
