Family Photo Shoot in San Jose | Celeste

One of the cool things about photography is getting to know many clients and families over the course of several years. Over a year before our most recent session, I got to work with Celeste on maternity portraits. I not only got to meet her baby girl – but I also got to meet her mom, and her other two siblings 🙂 Here are some images of their fun family photo shoot in San Jose. I will also go over two tips on setting expectations for your session with kids 🙂

Some Kids Are Slower to Warm Up – Others Get Burned Out After 30 Minutes

One of the questions that I often get is whether parents should go with a 30 or 60 minute session. This is a hard question to answer. Some kids take a little while to get warmed up, are shy, and the best pictures come towards the end of the session. Other kids start off really great and then get burned out after 30 minutes or so. You will know your children a little better than I will – and so I typically defer to parents on this decision… if your child is still at an age where they nap, scheduling the session with consideration to their nap schedule is really important.

Don’t Expect Children to Pose Perfectly For Every Shot

When working with kids between the ages of 2-4, don’t expect them to be able to pose perfectly for every shot. It actually takes a lot of work from the parents and the Photographer to get the best out of children. On my end, I have around 10 things that I can do to get them to having fun and posing for pictures. What works for one child may not work for the next. And so it may take a little while to find that one or two things that really get your child to be engaged in the session. So try not to get frustrated if it takes a little while to get them going 🙂

Typically, candid shots work really well for kids. Getting them dancing, jumping, running, singing, etc. is a great way to capture their personality. Once they see that the session also involves doing some of the things that they like, it makes it easier.
