Picking a location for your family portraits is really important. If you have a preference for the location of the session, make sure to let your Photographer know as much in advance as possible. Depending on the day and time of your session, your Photographer may have back-to-back sessions all at one location and cannot shoot at certain locations. Letting the Photographer know your preference beforehand can give them a heads up so that they can accommodate your needs. General parks that have grass, trees work really well for family portraits; however, if you are looking for a rustic location, I know the perfect spot! Here are some of the rustic family portraits at Bernal Ranch Park that we captured of AJ and her family. It was their first family portrait session and we captured a lot of really nice and fun images.

What Makes A Great Location?

There are many things that make a location great for portraits. From a Photographer’s standpoint, a great location can have pictures taken there at any time of the day. This generally means that there are areas where there is open shade. Shade creates soft, flattering light which is necessary for outdoor portraits.

A great location also has many different places you can take pictures at. Having a variety of different backgrounds and places where there are different levels to pose on (benches, fences, tree stumps, etc.) make for good images. One of the things I like about Bernal Ranch Park is that it also has a small covered area where photos can be taken if it starts to rain.
