Three Colors To Wear For Maternity Portraits
One of the most common questions that Photographers receive is, “what colors work well for maternity portraits?” Or any type of portraits for that matter. This is a really great question that has many different answers. Here are my thoughts on three colors to wear for maternity portraits. I also briefly discuss one color to avoid for maternity portraits as well.
Red Works Well At Parks
Red is a really bright and bold color to wear for maternity portraits. It is a really great color to wear at a park that has green grass, trees, etc. – because it is a complimentary color of green. Going off of basic color theory, red is a harmonious color of the green that shows up in the grass and trees that will be in the background. I found a really great article that explains the basics of color theory.
Pink Or Blue To Match The Gender Of The Baby
One of the most common colors that I see expectant parents to wear are pink and blue. It typically coordinates with the gender of the baby and this is a really cute idea. These are perhaps the most popular colors for maternity portraits and so you cannot really go with these colors.
White Is A Classic Color
There are all kinds of rules and ideas on when it is acceptable to wear white. In general, white symbolizes purity and innocence and I really like how white shows up in pictures. One thing to keep in mind is that white is one of those colors where it can be a little difficult to pull contrast and details out of. In images, white can appear “blown out” and at times it can be hard to see the shape of your baby bump. Other than this factor, I really LOVE the look of white 🙂
Try To Avoid Black
The one and only color that I would avoid, for maternity portraits, is black. Similar to how white can be hard to pull contrast and details out of – this is even more true with black. Wearing black is great to hide a few extra pounds that – if you are like me, you’ve earned over the years 😉 When you are taking maternity portraits, we want to showcase your baby bump and so wearing black can make this difficult. If you ABSOLUTELY have to wear black, wearing a black outfit that has some type of pattern on it may help just a little bit.
Hopefully these are some great tips on what colors to wear for maternity portraits. If you are expecting a baby and are looking for portraits, I would LOVE to connect with you. The best way to reach out to me is through the contact form on my website. Thanks!
