Photojournalistic Wedding Photography Explained

An Explanation of Photojournalistic Wedding Photography

Once you have booked your wedding venue and have established your wedding date, the next most important vendor is your Photographer 🙂 A common mistake that many wedding couples make is selecting their Photographer based on their set budget. There are many ways to find an affordable wedding Photographer – but the best place to start is finding a style that matches with what you are looking for. Some Photographers specialize in elaborate poses and look to create images that you’d see in wedding magazines. You’ll spend a good chunk of your day posing for all kinds of portraits and enjoying your wedding day will be affected. In the couples that I have worked with – most prefer a photojournalistic wedding photography style over all others 🙂 Here are three benefits of photojournalistic wedding photography.

More FUN, Less Awkward Posing

Wedding photojournalism is a very “hands off” approach to wedding photography. There are a handful of moments where your Photographer would take the lead and pose you and your family for photos – but the majority of the time, their main goal is to be in the background. Capturing the day as it unfolds naturally and unobtrusively. In my experience, most couples feel very awkward when you are up close, pointing a giant camera at their face 🙂 When your wedding day starts, you’ll definitely notice your wedding Photographer – but after a while of them being in the background – you’ll get used to it and will not even notice that they are there in most instances.

Photojournalistic wedding photography gives you the space to enjoy your wedding day without having to be interrupted with various different posing opportunities. For example, when you put your wedding dress on – a photojournalistic wedding Photographer will just capture the moment as it happens. At the most, they may recommend a good place in terms of lighting – but they are not going to stop you and go through a bunch of poses while you are doing this. If a genuine moment occurs during this moment, they will capture it. But they are not going to stop you and try to create an emotional moment that is not there. No, “close your eyes… put your hands here… look over here and smile, etc.” A photojournalistic Photographer is not going to stop you and have you do something again because they did not get the specific shot that they were hoping for.

Photojournalistic Photographers Capture – Not Create Your Images

Perhaps the easiest way to describe how a photojournalistic wedding Photographer will photograph your day is that they will capture images – not create them. There is a very big difference between these two styles. Like I mentioned before, there are definitely times where traditional wedding poses will be photographed – but the majority of the images will be taken candidly. You can have fun and let your Photographer worry about capturing genuine moments instead of stopping to pose for created moments.

More Wedding Images

Another characteristic of photojournalistic wedding photography is that they take and deliver more images. Instead of delivering the very best 500-700 images, photojournalistic wedding Photographers may deliver 1,000-2,000 wedding images. The fun images of your guests on the dance floor, you interacting with your bridal party, will all be delivered to you. Since fun and candid moments are what photojournalistic wedding Photographers are looking to capture, you’ll get way more of these moments delivered to you. And I think this is what most couples want 🙂
