3 Tips On Taking A Business Headshot

How To Take A Business Headshot

Headshots are important. Really-really important to the success of any business! A business headshot can do a lot of things for your business. But perhaps the most important thing that a business headshot will do is convey a level of relate-ability. When people look at your headshot, they should get a positive sense of what it is like doing business with you. Here are my top three tips on taking a business headshot.

Be Confident

First and foremost, make sure that you are confident before you even step in front of the camera! One of the worst things that you can do is to come into the session thinking you are going to take a bad picture. Sure, you may have taken a “bad” picture before. Everyone has done it! But you have to prepare yourself to take your best picture yet. If you come into the session thinking negatively, there is a good chance that it will show up in the images. So be confident!

Smile

Most people believe that they are smiling MUCH bigger than they actually are in images. If you want to portray confidence and relate-ability, you are going to have to smile. Even a half smile – with no teeth will do the trick 🙂 I like to remind clients that the expression in your headshot should be similar to the expression you give when shaking hands with a person for the first time.

Dress The Part

Another really important tip is to dress in a style of clothing that fits your company or brand. If you are a surf instructor, taking a headshot in a suit and tie may not relate to a potential client in the way a t-shirt would. Along these same lines, if you are a Realtor, dressing in just a polo shirt may not be the look you want to portray. Don’t overthink this too much – but your wardrobe is important in establishing the correct relate-ability for your business headshot.
