When To Take Maternity Photographs

The Best Time To Take Maternity Photographs

One of the most common questions that I get from expecting parents is, “when is the best time to take maternity photographs?” Or something along those lines 🙂 Here are a few tips to consider on when the best time to take maternity photographs is.

Maternity Photographs

Give Yourself At Least Four Weeks Before Your Due Date

The first thing to consider, when planning maternity portraits is that they should be at least a few weeks before your due date. There are several reasons why I recommend this. First and foremost, babies tend to come when they are ready 🙂 This can mean right on your due date. It can be a few days after your due date. But this can also be several weeks before your due date. With so many things being out of your control, planning on scheduling your session several weeks in advance is highly recommended.

At 34-36 Weeks, Your “Baby Bump” Will Be Showing

An important thing to consider is how much your “baby bump” is showing. If you are showing pretty well, I recommend scheduling the session around this time. When you are “showing” and it is obvious that you are pregnant, this is a good time for photos 🙂 If it is taking a little longer for your baby bump to be pronounced, give it a little while. You will want to be able to show off your baby bump in a lot of the photos and so this is really important. Everyone shows differently so you will need to be the judge of this 🙂

At 34-36 Weeks, You Will Still Be Comfortable Taking Photos

Another really important thing to consider is your comfort level. The further along you are in your pregnancy, the more tired and uncomfortable you will become. It is just part of the deal! You will want to schedule your session at a time you are feeling your best. Taking maternity photographs when you are comfortable walking, laying down, etc. will give you more options for posing. At some of the locations, you may be required to walk a decent distance and having enough energy to do this is important 🙂

At 34-36 Weeks, You Can Get Your Images Back In Time

Last but not least, you will want to get your maternity portraits back before the baby arrives. For myself, I typically deliver images in 5-7 business days after your session. You can post the images online, make prints and put them around the house. And if you are planning on having a baby shower, you can use the images to decorate the shower 🙂

Hopefully these are some useful tips that you can consider for your own session. If you are expecting a child and want to take maternity pictures, I’d love to connect. The best way to reach me is through the contact form on my website. Thanks!
