Perhaps the biggest tip that I could give, to anyone taking maternity portraits is to schedule them in the evening. Portraits taken around sunset have a really nice look to them. This has a lot to do with the angle of the sun. In the evening, the sun is really low and it creates soft and very vibrant lighting. The color of the light is more vibrant than any other time in the day. Similar lighting can be seen when the sun is rising; however, most people are just waking up at this time. Red Is The Color Of Emotion & Passion

One of the things to consider, when choosing your outfit, is what the color of your outfit represents. I found a great article on color representation and you can read more in it here. Red is a great option for maternity portraits because it generally represents love, passion, and emotion. All great things to represent for maternity portraits. A vibrant color goes great with the vibrant light at sunset!

Light Flares

Another thing I like about sunset maternity portraits is the light flares. When shooting into the sun, there are many opportunities to get light pouring into the image. This is actually something people will try to emulate in filters or in Photoshop – but at sunset, you can get these effects naturally. While I do edit all of the images in Photoshop, I do not “Photoshop” things into an image that were not there when it was shot.

Silhouettes

Last but not least, when the sun is low in the sky and really bright, you can capture great silhouettes. These require the sun to be directly behind you and for the sun to be much brighter than the subject. With the cut out of your baby bump, this is a really dynamic image.
