In Home Portraits With Toddlers – Three Ideas

When it come to locations for family portraits, your home can be a great option. I think that this is especially the case with toddlers. Here are some images from Brittany’s session. As well as three ideas on how to take in home portraits with toddlers 🙂

Pick A Room Or Area In Your Home That Has Great Meaning

Firstly, since the session will be indoors, we want to select a room 🙂 This can be a bedroom or the living room. But I have found that the child’s nursery works really well. Often times it has cute decorations that make for a great backdrop. It is has meaning – as it is where you will spend a lot of time with the baby.

Choose An Activity To Capture Candid Moments With The Baby

For family portraits, I LOVE getting fun and candid images that feel unposed. One of the best ways to capture these images is by choosing an activity to do. For toddler’s I have found that reading books is great. Other activities can be playing a board game, playing with toys, or even having Mom or Dad play a musical instrument. For example a guitar 🙂

Consider The Time Of The Session And The Length Of The Session

Scheduling the session at a time of the day where your child is at their best is REALLY important! In my experience, scheduling the session about an hour after they typically wake up from a nap is great. It may be a little difficult to predict the exact timing of this – but you can use your best judgement 😉 Also, the length of the session is key. I have come to find that 30 minutes is a good amount of time for toddlers to stay engaged and energized for pictures. Some kids can last 60 minutes – but the majority of kids get a little tired after 30-45 minutes 🙂

I really LOVE taking in home portraits with toddlers. So hopefully these tips can give you an idea of scheduling your own session. If you’d like to schedule a session, the best way to reach me is through the contact form on my website. Thanks!
