Tips On Taking Pictures With Kids

My Top Five Tips On Taking Pictures With Kids | Varalaxmi Family Portraits

Taking family pictures with kids is a lot easier than you may think! It takes a little preparation, and a lot of energy – but the end result are fun and candid images 🙂 Here are my top five tips on taking pictures with kids.

The Time Of The Session REALLY Matters

First and foremost, you want to schedule the session when your child is at their best. Some days, this may be hard to predict. But I have found that planning the session around the time that they just wake up from their nap is great. After they are rested and have their optimal amount of energy, they’ll be at their best!

Plan Your Favorite Groupings Once They Are Warmed Up And Happy

In my experience, children “warm up” at different parts of the session. Some babies pop out of the car seat and are all smiles. And other children take 10 or 15 minutes to really warm up to the session. Once we notice that the baby is having fun and really smiling – it is a GREAT idea to take our favorite poses. This can be poses of the baby by themselves. Or if you have multiple kids, it can be pictures of just the kids by themselves.

Giving Them A Snack Break Works

One of the tips that can work really well is giving kids a small break in between poses. Often times, children can become overwhelmed and just need a little break. I recommend bringing something to drink and a little snack to keep them fueled. Depending on the age of your children, this can also be used as an incentive.

Come Prepared To Sing, Dance, Run Around And Have A Lot Of Energy!

Another of the tips on taking pictures with kids is to have a lot of energy! Make sure you have had your coffee and are prepared to run around and have fun 🙂 Perhaps the most important factor of kids having fun is if Mom & Dad are also having fun. For many of the poses, you’ll be singing, running around and doing ANYTHING to get a big expression out of the kids 🙂

Make Sure To Bring Some Toys

Last but not least, bringing a few of their favorite toys can also work well. It is cute to get images of them playing and having fun with their toys. And this is generally an easy way to get them smiling candidly and natural 😉

Hopefully these tips on taking pictures with kids have been helpful! In my experience, it is a lot easier than most parents think 🙂 If you are interested in taking pictures, I’d love to connect with you! The best way to reach me is through the contact form on my website. Thanks!
