I believe that family portraits are one of the best things you can do as a family. It is something that you’ll cherish for many years down the line. And you will never regret taking them. There are a lot of different styles of family portraits – but I prefer capturing fun and candid pictures that feel natural. Here are some of the fun and candid family pictures at Stanford University of Zaineb and her family. As well as four techniques to capture natural smiles from children.

Children LOVE To Spin And Bounce!

One of my favorite ways to get smiles from children is to have Mom & Dad spin and bounce them. This technique works really well for both younger and older children. As long as Mom or Dad are able to spin – this is a great way to capture smiles. If we are sitting for the pose, bouncing them on your knee works really well. Along with it being fun, it gets kids in the mindset that the session is going to be fun. When kids are having fun, their personalities really come out in the images!

Funny Faces From Mom & Dad Work Well

During the session, I like to get all of the different combinations of pictures. This also includes images of children alone. For children that are around 3 years old or older, I’ll instruct them to close their eyes and when they open them – Mom and Dad are making a funny face! As long as your child is able to close their eyes and open them back up when I instruct them, this is also a great technique!

Running To Mom/Dad

In my experience working with kids, I find that they REALLY like to run. I like finding cute ways to incorporate this into the session. Getting pictures of your children running into your arms is really adorable 🙂

1-2-3, ICE CREAM!

I’m not sure where the whole idea of saying, “CHEESE” for pictures came from. But I find that children love ice cream way more than cheese! For this, I ask the kid if they like ice cream. The question alone gets them smiling 🙂 Then I say, “Ok, when I count to three, I want you to yell ice cream as loud as you can.” The pictures before I get to three and the pictures of them yelling ice cream works great!

Hopefully these fun and candid family pictures at Stanford University have given you some ideas for your own session. Remember, to capture genuine smiles -> spinning and bouncing, making funny faces, running, and saying ice cream ALL work really well 🙂
