Golden Hour Maternity Portraits

Golden Hour Maternity Portraits | Vasona Park | Tania

Perhaps the best time to take outdoor portraits is in the hour or so before the sun sets. This time is often referred to as “golden hour.” In the moments before the sun is setting, the light is very soft and it’s color is really vibrant. Hence the name, “golden hour” :). Here are some of the golden hour maternity portraits of Tania. As well as a two things to consider when scheduling golden hour portraits.

“Golden Hour” Is Not REALLY An Hour!

One of the first things to consider about golden hour is that it does not actually last an entire hour 🙂 Depending on the location of your session, it may last 20 or 30 minutes. And just because you schedule portraits during this time – does not guarantee that the lighting is always going to be “golden.” For example, if your session is scheduled on a day where there are a lot of clouds in the sky, this can really affect the images. While the lighting will still be soft, the clouds can block out some of the colors that usually come from the sun. Buildings, trees, hills, etc. may also block the sun in some cases – so keep this in mind.

The Timing Of The Session Is KEY

Another thing to really consider about golden hour portraits is the timing. Since the vibrant colors of the sun may only last 20-30 minutes, it is important that you are on time for the session. If your session is scheduled at 6 PM – with sunset at 7 PM, showing up late may cause you to miss the “golden hour” window completely. Planning on arriving 10-15 minutes before the start of the session is really important. Also keep in mind that if it is the first time that you have been to the location, getting instructions on where to meet for the start of the session will save you time. For all of my portrait sessions, I like to send out a details explanation on where to meet for the start of the session. Reading through this before arriving to the session is important 🙂

Hopefully Tania’s golden hour maternity portraits have given you some ideas for your own maternity portraits 🙂 If you’d like to schedule your own session, I would love to connect with you!
