On of my favorite locations for family portraits is Hellyer Park. There is a beautiful lake, trees, and a lot of space to move around. Here are some of the images we captured of Margarita and her family. As well as three of reasons why choosing to have your family photos at Hellyer Park is a great idea.

Hellyer Park Is Easily Accessible From The Freeway

One of the most convenient aspects of Hellyer Park is that it is really close to the freeway. It is right off of Highway 101 in San Jose and you can actually see it as you drive by. If you have never been to the park, it is always easier to schedule the session at a place that can easily be accessed. I recommend planning on arriving at least 5-10 minutes before the start of the session – so that you have enough time to park and meet with the Photographer.

On Most Days The Park Is Not Too Crowded

Another convenient part of scheduling family portraits at Hellyer Park is that it is never really too crowded. It is a pretty large part – but I typically take portraits at a spot where not too many people go. Most visitors will go to the playground or they may have a party at the picnic areas. But this is out of the way where I like to meet 🙂 In my experience, having less people around makes clients feel more comfortable taking pictures. There are less distractions and the session is not interrupted by people walking through the images.

There Is Great Lighting And Many Different Backgrounds

Lastly, I really like taking family photos at Hellyer Park because there is great lighting and a lot of different backgrounds. Sessions that are scheduled in the early morning or the evening will have great light – but the trees provide shade in the afternoon. Shade is great for portraits because it creates soft, flattering light – which is ideal for portraits. Along with there being great lighting, there are several really nice places for portraits. I love the large oak trees, the water, and even the paths where we can get candid walking shots.

If you are looking for a really great place for family portraits, Hellyer Park is a great option. It is easily accessible, is not too crowded, and it has many different backgrounds 🙂
