How To Take Family Portraits If It Rains

3 Options For Your Family Portraits If It Rains

November and December are the busiest time of the year for family portraits. Unfortunately, it is also the rainiest time of the year as well! Having a contingency plan for rain is important – to make sure you get your family portraits taken. Here are three options for your family portraits if it rains 🙂

Consider Taking The Session In Studio Or At Your Home

One of the best options to consider, it it is scheduled to rain during your session is to schedule the session indoors. Indoor family portraits are MUCH different than outdoor portraits and so you will want to consider a few things. Firstly, the session may take less time than an outdoor session. This is due to the fact that you will not be moving from one location of the park, for example, to the next. Secondly, tight spaces may not always work well with children. In my experience, most children are at their best when there is plenty of space for them to move around and be themselves. In fact, capturing kids moving and having fun during the session is something incorporate into all of my sessions. This can be difficult to do inside.

Find A Location That Has Outdoor Coverings

Another option for your family portraits if it rains is to schedule the session at a location with outdoor coverings. My go-to location for this is Stanford University. Even if it is POURING rain, you’ll be able to stay dry in the main hallways of the campus. One thing to keep in mind is that while outdoor coverings will keep you dry, it may still be too cold for small children.

If You Are Flexible, Look To Reschedule The Session

Last but not least, you can always reschedule – if you and your Photographer’s calendar has availability. One thing to keep in mind is that November and December is the busiest time of the year for family portraits. Rescheduling may be difficult if your Photographer’s schedule is packed. In this case, early morning sessions or weekday sessions can be your best shot.

Hopefully these can give you some ideas on what to do for family portraits if it rains 🙂 Thanks!
