Studio Portraits vs Outdoor Portraits

Studio Portraits vs Outdoor Portraits | Three Things To Consider

If you have never taken professional portraits, you may not be familiar with the differences between studio portraits vs outdoor portraits. In my experience, they are VERY different experiences. And in most instances, I believe that people are most comfortable taking outdoor portraits. Here are a few things to consider when deciding on studio or outdoor portraits.

Consider The Amount of Space in Studio vs Outdoors

The first thing to consider, when debating whether to take portraits in a studio or outdoors, is the amount of space. In nearly all instances, a studio will have much less space than an outdoor venue. In my experience, this is a big factor when taking pictures with young children. To feel comfortable, most children need space to roam around – and this is hard to facilitate in a studio setting. However, a studio settings does work particularly well for kids who have experience taking pictures and are not shy. I recommend an outdoor setting for most children that are around 5 years old or younger.

The Backgrounds Are Limited in a Studio

Another thing to consider is the background. In my studio, for example, I just have a plain white background. An outdoor setting will have a variety of different backgrounds. For some people, this does not really matter too much. One of the benefits of a white background is that almost any color will really stand out.

Studios Are Weather Proof

One of the main advantages to taking studio portraits vs outdoor portraits is that weather will not be a factor. If you are planning a session on a day where the weather is rainy, for example, this will not affect the session at all. On a rainy day, the studio will be warm, I have hot coffee, and I typically have John Mayer playing in the background 🙂 Along with these things, the lighting in studio portraits is easier to control and the images will have soft and flattering lighting 😉

Hopefully these tips have given you a better understanding on what to expect from a studio session vs an outdoor session. If you are looking to schedule portraits, I would love to connect with you to see what option would work best. Thanks!
