Family Portrait Tips For Families With Two Kids

Family Portrait Tips For Families With Two Kids | My 3 Top Suggestions

Whether you have never taken family portraits before or you have a little experience, it is important to plan ahead. Especially when kids are involved. In my experience, children under the age of 5 years old or younger can struggle taking family portraits if there is not a β€œgame plan.” This is even more so the case when there are multiple kids. So here are a few family portrait tips for families with two kids πŸ™‚

Keeping The Session Short Usually Works Best

One of the first things that I recommend is to plan on 30 minutes for the session. In my experience, 30 minutes is the perfect amount of time to keep children engaged in the session. Anything longer than this will be pushing the limits on their patience πŸ™‚ In some instances, some children take a little while to warm up. And if I happen to notice this, I will usually start with poses where I am further away. This helps kids feel a little more comfortable with their surroundings.

Focus On The Kids Interacting

One of the main things I like to do, when photographing families with two kids, is to capture natural moments of the kids together. If both kids are able to walk/run, this is perfect to get them running, climbing and just having fun. In my experience, once the kids know that the session is mostly about having fun – it makes everything else easier.

Get Mom & Dad Involved In The Fun

Another useful tip is to include Mom & Dad in on the fun! This can take many different forms – but I have found that tickling, spinning, and bouncing the kids work really well. One of the poses I really like to do is to have Mom & Dad take turns getting pictures with the kids alone. The parent who is not in the picture can either do something funny in the direction I am standing. Or they can also quickly run in-and-out of the frame to get the kids laughing. In other cases, having another family member or friend tag along to the session is also really helpful. They can help get kids engaged and the kids will be a little more familiar with them than they will be with me πŸ™‚
