Maternity Pictures At Hellyer Park | My Approach to Maternity Mini Sessions With Kids
One of my favorite locations for maternity portraits in San Jose is Hellyer Park. It is pretty easy to get to, it has a lot of beautiful places for portraits, and there are usually not a lot of people. Here are some of the maternity pictures at Hellyer Park – of Beena and her family. As well as my approach to maternity mini sessions with Kids.
30 Minutes Is A Good Amount of Time
In my experience, 30 minutes is a good amount of time for kids who are about two years old. Anything more than this may be hard to keep their attention. If you want to have a little bit of a longer session, I recommend bringing someone along with you to help with your child. For example, a grandparent can keep them busy while we get pictures of just you and your partner.
Kids Are at Their Best When They Are Having Fun
When working with kids, the most important thing to do is to get them having fun. There are many ways to do this. Some of my favorite techniques are having mom or dad spin them or lift them in the air. For example, I may have dad spin in two really quick circles and then stop. Right as dad stops, this should create a GIANT smile. And then mom and dad can look at the camera at the same time 🙂
Getting kids in motion is also a great idea to get genuine smiles. Some of the ways I like to do this is by getting walking shots. And another way is to have them run towards mom and dad.
Preparing Them Before The Session
Lastly, I highly recommend preparing your child in the days leading up to the session. Letting them know that you will be going to the park to have fun and to take pictures is a great way to do this. If they see that you are excited for the session, they usually will also. Also, if there are specific poses that you want to do with them – practicing these beforehand is a good idea. For example, kissing your baby bump or a similar pose 😉
Hopefully Beena’s maternity pictures at Hellyer Park have given you some ideas for your own session. Remember – 30 minutes is a good amount of time for kids around two. Getting kids just having fun is the best approach for capturing genuine smiles. And preparing them before the session will ensure the sessions goes as best as possible. Thanks!
