How To Prepare For Headshots | Three Tips
Headshots are extremely important to a company’s online presence or for your personal brand. And every business professional should have one. If it has been a while since you last updated your headshot, or you have been putting it off – here are three tips on how to prepare for headshots 🙂
You Definitely Want To Dress To Impress
First and foremost, you want to make sure to dress to impress! While the focus on the headshot should be of your expression, your outfit is also an important part. I recommend choosing an outfit that matches the type of job you currently have or the one you are applying for. For example, if you are a tri-athlete, taking a headshot in a suite-and-tie may not make too much sense 🙂 Headshots can be as formal or as casual as you want them to be – but they should match the look and feel you are trying to portray.
I also recommend considering the color of the outfit you choose. White, grey, and blue are great general colors for headshots. And colors like red are very strong and passionate colors. For women, I great tip is to wear a plain colored shirt and add accessories like earrings or a necklace. For men, the color of your tie can accomplish the same thing.
Portray Confidence and Approachability
Another important tip to consider is the expression in your headshot. The best headshots give off a confident and approachable feel to them. One way to portray this is by imagining that your expression is similar to the expression you’d give when shaking someone’s hand when you meet them for the first time. It does not have to be a big, over exaggerated smile – it should definitely be friendly.
Don’t Psych Yourself Out Before The Session
Lastly, it is really important not to psych yourself out before the session. One of the worst things you can do is say, “I’m horrible at taking pictures.” Or something along these lines. When I hear this, I cringe! Sure – everyone is capable of taking a bad picture. And your last session may have been just that. But you want to come into the session with a positive attitude – and this will translate into taking the best picture possible.
Headshots are a really important part of any business. To take your best “shot,” remember to dress to impress, portray confidence, and come in with a positive attitude. Thanks!
