Three Things To Consider When Taking Maternity Pictures In San Francisco
San Francisco is one of the prettiest places to take maternity pictures. It is actually one of the most iconic places in the entire world. And living in the Bay Area we are VERY lucky to have it in our “backyard.” But if you plan on taking maternity pictures in San Francisco, there are a few things to keep in mind. Here are three things you should consider when planning a maternity session in San Francisco.
The Session Should Take Place In The Evening – If Possible
The best time to take outdoor portraits is always going to be in the evening time. At this time of the day, the lighting is soft and flattering for portraits. Although the afternoon time is the sunniest time of the day, the lighting can be VERY harsh. And this is not what we want 🙂 In the evening time, the lighting is soft and flattering – which is ideal for maternity pictures.
The location for the session also plays a factor in this as well. When I shoot sessions in San Francisco, it is usually at one of the beaches. Crissy Field and Baker Beach are two of my favorites 😉 Sessions at the beach typically do not have shade. Shade is a great alternative to a session being scheduled at a time that is not in the evening. Similar to the soft lighting that is available in the evening, shade has this same affect. But beaches do not have this option.
The View of The Golden Gate Bridge Can Be Obstructed By Clouds
Another thing to consider when scheduling maternity pictures in San Francisco is that the view of the Golden Gate Bridge can be obstructed by clouds. And it is nearly impossible to predict. Although the Golden Gate Bridge is an excellent background, I would not get my heart set on having it in the background. Instead, the focus on the session should be capturing fun and candid images of this important life milestone 🙂
For Juvy’s session, we scheduled it with a view of the San Francisco city skyline. There is an almost perfect view of the city from Treasure Island. This was my first time shooting maternity portraits at this location and it turned out great!
Prepare For It To Be Windy!
Last but definitely not least, wind is always a factor in San Francisco. This is especially the case in the evening. If you or your partner have long hair, I would plan on bringing something along to help manage your hair. A brush can be a quick fix for a few fly away hairs. But having a contingency plan (putting your hair up or in a pony tail) is recommended.
Maternity pictures in San Francisco can be a lot of fun and it can make for BEAUTIFUL images. If you are planning on having a session in San Francisco, hopefully these tips have been helpful 🙂 Of course, I would love to be there to help capture some fun and candid maternity portraits of you and your family.
