Four Useful Tips On Taking Fun Family Portraits In Your Backyard
Finding a location for your family portraits can be a difficult task. Especially during Covid-19. One possible idea is to have the session in your backyard. Here are four tips on taking fun family portraits in your backyard.
Make Sure The Backyard Has Good Lighting
Perhaps the most important aspect of taking fun family portraits in your backyard is that the lighting is good. The main reason why parks are great for family portraits is because there are various places within the park that have good lighting. These areas are generally in the shade or backgrounds where your back is to the sun. And the same concepts apply when taking family portraits in your backyard.
If there is not a lot of shade, the next best option is to have the session at a time of day when the lighting is soft and even. The most common times for this is going to be in the EARLY morning (as the sun is rising) and in the evening (as the sun is setting). Most people do not like to take portraits at 7 or 8 AM – so the evening time is typically the best time to take outdoor portraits 😉
Standing And Sitting Poses And All of the Different Groupings
Depending on the size of your family, it is important that we get all of the different groupings. This can include individual portraits as well as large group poses. In most situations, we will do the same kinds of poses both standing and sitting.
Be Ready to Have Fun Interacting With Your Family
Most importantly, I like to get fun and candid poses of you and your family interacting with each other. These are great for capturing everyone’s personality 🙂
Include Your Pets
Lastly, if you have pets – we want to make sure they are included in the session as well. You will know your pet the best and how to get their attention. But having treats ready or one of their toys is a great way to get them looking at the camera 😉 When taking pictures of pets, it is important that everyone else stay looking at the camera. Often times, I will have just a quick moment when pets are looking at the camera. It is even harder when there are more than one pet!
If you are considering scheduling some fun family portraits in your backyard, just remember these five tips 🙂 Thanks!
