Engagement Portraits In Halfmoon Bay | Gretta & Omkar
For most couples, engagement portraits are your first time taking “professional portraits.” If this is the case, it may seem a little intimidating. The great news is that engagement portraits are a lot easier than you think 🙂 Here are some of the fun and candid engagement portraits in Halfmoon Bay of Gretta and Omkar. As well as four ways I try to make engagement sessions easy for couples.
Whenever Possible, I Like To Take The Focus Away From The Camera
I am not sure where the phrase, “1-2-3 CHEESE,” came from – but this is one of the things I try to steer clear of. MAYBE it’ll come up when working with kids. But even then, I will even switch “CHEESE” out with something like “ICE CREAM!” Out of all of the images I look to capture or create, a small amount of them will be with you and your partner staring right into the camera. Rather than this, I take the focus away from the camera and put it on each other.
I like capturing fun and candid moments of you and your partner interacting. And there are many ways of doing this. For example, I may ask one of you a question to answer about your partner. When you are focused on each other, you forget about the camera and the images look more natural.
I Keep My Distance
Another thing that I consider is that most couples are not comfortable with a camera up-close and in their face. This can be a little awkward for everyone! So one of the easiest ways I help couples feel comfortable is by giving them some space. In my experience, couples are most comfortable when the Photographer is further away. Being further away enables me to capture both wide shots and some medium range portraits at the same time.
We Capture Genuine Interactions of You and Your Partner
Like I mentioned before, the best way to capture natural looking images is by creating genuine interactions. Asking questions of you and your partner is one way to do this. And some other ways can be by having one of you tell a story about a specific memory in your relationship. Or even by having you sing a song 🙂 In the pictures you cannot really tell what is being done to create these fun and candid moments. But you should be able to tell that you are having fun together and are in love!
I stay Away From Traditional Poses
Lastly, I also try to limit the amount of traditional poses. Rather than “pose” you, I kind of give suggestions on what to do with your hands. I will give you something to do, and then just let you and your partner interact with one another. For couples who have never taken portraits before, this is the easiest way to pose. However, if I feel like you are REALLY comfortable in front of the camera I may adjust my approach. As your Photographer, I like to keep an open mind and not do the same poses for every couple. If there are specific poses that you want to do, I also make a point to get your input before the end of the session.
Hopefully Gretta & Omkar’s engagement portraits in Halfmoon Bay have given you a glimpse on how I approach engagement portraits. If you are looking to schedule your own engagement portraits, I would love to connect. Thanks!
