Where to Look When Taking Family Portraits

Family Portraits Tips: Where to Look When Taking Family Portraits

If it is your first time taking family portraits, you may have a lot of questions. The great thing is that your Photographer will guide you through the entire process. But one of the most important things to consider is where to look when taking family portraits.

When people look at a picture, they first look at your eyes. And your eyes tell the story. Your eyes can tell if you look happy, nervous, or if you are having fun.

Do What Feels Natural

Perhaps the most important thing to consider when thinking about where to look when taking family portraits is to just do what feels natural. If you feel awkward, it is going to show in the pictures. I like capturing fun and candid family portraits – where you are just having fun. So looking and feeling natural is really important. This can change from looking at the camera, to looking at each other, or even looking to the side.

Look At Each Other For Candid Shots

For candid shots, it is best to be looking at and interacting with each other. This gives off the feel of being a genuine moment with your family. Often times I will ask you to say something to another family member and this is to capture your reactions. I LOVE images where you are laughing or smiling while looking at another family member.

For Shots Where Everyone Is Looking At ther Camera, Try Not To Check If Other Family Members Are Looking At The Camera

One of the most important tips is to make sure that you are not checking on whether or not other family members are looking at the camera. This is especially the case when working with kids. When working with small children, they will typically look right at the camera, with a great expression, for just a short amount of time. And it is important that you are not looking away when this happens 🙂

So just remember to do what feels natural, look at each other for candid shots, and try not to peek at other family members for straight on shots. Hopefully these tips on where to look when taking family portraits 🙂 Thanks!
