Sarah’s Fun and Candid Sunset Maternity Portraits at Bernal Ranch Park
I recently had the opportunity to take some fun and candid sunset maternity portraits at Bernal Ranch Park. There were a lot of things that made the session turn out really great and so I wanted to share my thoughts on taking maternity portraits at sunset. So here are five reasons why you should ALWAYS take maternity portraits around sunset 🙂
1. Around Sunset, There Are Less People Around
If you are like me, you do not like to take pictures when there are too many people around. The less people around, the better! One of the added benefits about taking pictures around sunset is that there are less people around. If you are a little shy about taking pictures, sunset is a great option. From a photography perspective, sunset is also great because there are less people in the background of the images.
2. The Temperature Is Great At Sunset
Everyone is different – but I personally like the weather a little on the cooler side. I sweat REALLY easy and so I can appreciate the weather being in the mid 60’s or 70’s. If you are the same way, sunset is the perfect time for taking maternity portraits. If you happen to like the weather a little warmer, you can always bring a coat to throw on in between poses 😉
3. Most Importantly, The Lighting Will Be Perfect
Perhaps the #1 reason why sunset is the best time for your maternity portraits is because of the lighting! One of the most common mistakes that people make is believing that when the sun is the brightest, this is the best time to take pictures. This is NOT the case. You can definitely still take pictures in the middle of the day – but sunset is the best time. At this time, the lighting is soft and the most flattering for maternity portraits.
4. You Will Have Plenty of Time To Get Ready For The Session
If it takes you a little more time than most people to get ready, scheduling the session around sunset is a great option 🙂 You’ll have a lot more time than waking up early and taking your portraits first thing in the morning. One of the things to consider is that since the sun is setting at a certain time, you’ll need to be on time to the session. Once the sun goes down, there will only be about ten minutes before there is not a lot of light to take pictures. PRO TIP: Most Photographers will arrive to the session early. If you are able to arrive 5-10 minutes before the start of the session, you’ll be able to take pictures for a little longer.
5. The Sun Is In The Perfect Spot
Lastly, I LOVE shooting sessions around sunset because you can get some really beautiful images with the sun in the background. The colors of the sun at sunset are vibrant and can make for BEAUTIFUL images! Whenever possible, I like to get the sun shooting into the image – for a dynamic look that couldn’t be captured otherwise.
If you are looking to schedule your own maternity portraits, hopefully these sunset maternity portraits at Bernal Ranch Park have given you some ideas. Thanks!
