How To Organize A Picture Perfect First Birthday Party – Four Tips
Your child’s first birthday is a HUGE milestone that should be celebrated with photos. Chances are, they may not remember much from the event. But you will have the opportunity to share the beautiful images of the party for years to come. Here are hour tips to consider on how to organize a picture perfect first birthday party.
1: Consider Taking Portraits In Advance of The Actual Party
The first tip on how to organize a picture perfect first birthday party is to consider taking some of the portraits before the actual party. In my experience, many children can become overwhelmed on their first birthday. With a lot of festivities going on, meeting new people, and trying to capture pictures all in a short amount of time can cause many children to not be at their best. I recommend either scheduling the individual and family portraits 30-45 minutes prior to guests arriving or even a few days in advance of the party. Any other posed portraits can be taken later on in the event, and are “icing on the cake” – if your child is not feeling up to taking them.
2: If You Have A Backdrop, Make Sure It Is Positioned Properly For Photos
One of the most important parts of the party are the decorations and backdrop 🙂 This is where some of the most important pictures will be taken. Positioning it properly will ensure that your pictures come out as good as possible.
Outdoor Backdrops: When positioning the backdrop outdoors, I recommend having it with the sun behind it and in the shade if possible. If the backdrop is facing the sun, this will cause people to squint their eyes. And shade provides soft and flattering lighting.
Indoor Backdrops: If your backdrop is indoors, avoid placing the backdrop where it is directly behind a bright window. The inside of the party will be much darker than outside and the bright window will cause the background to be very bright. Your Photographer will have to use a flash in order to balance this out – which is not ideal in most situations 😉
Provide Enough Space: Lastly, whenever possible, try to have enough space between where your backdrop is set up and where the pictures will be taken from. The more space between the backdrop and where the pictures will be taken from, the better 😉 If the backdrop is crammed into a tight space, your Photographer will need to take the pictures on a wide angle lens – which is not the most flattering lens for portraits.
3: Practice Smashing The Cake A Couple of Days Before The Party
The third tip on how to organize a picture perfect first birthday party is to practice smashing the cake before the party. Cake smashing is a cute trend that a lot of people love doing. However, most kids don’t particularly like it because they are not used to doing it. If this is something that you would like photographed on their birthday, I recommend buying a practice cake for them. That way, the day of the party, they are used to doing it 😉
4: Try Not To Overwhelm Your Child With Too Many Group Photos
Last but not least, try not to overwhelm your child with too many group photos. As mentioned before, I recommend taking the most important photos before the start of the event. At this time, your child should be in a great mood and full of smiles. In my experience, children tend to get the most overwhelmed for picture taking at the end of the party. After meeting a bunch of new people, playing, singing, etc. they may be too tired for dozens of more pictures. If this is the case, set realistic expectations that they may not be smiling in a lot of these pictures or that you may take some of these group photos without your child.
