Studio Portraits With Children Under One Year Old

Four Tips On Taking Studio Portraits With Children Under One Year Old

Studio portraits are a great option for kids of a specific age. In my experience, kids that are younger than about 18 months or older than about 5 years old work well in a studio. Outside of these ages, kids typically need more room to feel comfortable. In this case, an outdoor session would work much better than a studio. If your child falls in the recommended age range, here are four tips on taking studio portraits with children under one year old 🙂

Tip 1: Schedule The Session At A Time They Will Be Well Rested And Fed

One of the biggest benefits of a studio session is the controlled lighting. Because of this, the session can be scheduled at any time of the day and it will not affect the quality of the lighting. I recommend scheduling the session at a time that your child is typically at their best. Of course, kids can be unpredictable – but scheduling the session at a time that they are usually well rested and fed is ideal.

Tip 2: 30 Minutes Is The Perfect Amount Of Time

Tip number two on studio portraits with children under one year old is keeping the session to 30 minutes. In my experience, this is the perfect amount of time to get some really nice pictures. And you will most likely have enough time to change them into a second outfit. I recommend arriving to the studio about 15 minutes early to get them familiar to the space. This will ensure that they are as “warmed up” as possible for the start of the session.

Tip 3: Bring Props But Only Things You Don’t Mind Being In Pictures

I also encourage parents to bring any props that they would like to include into the session. If they have a favorite stuffy, this can be cute in pictures and it can help keep them comfortable while taking pictures. I caution parents from bringing a phone or tablet to the session – as this may be difficult to take away from them.

Tip 4: Be Silly Behind The Camera

Lastly, I also recommend bringing any family members that can help capture their attention and make them laugh. This can be a parent or a sibling. Family members know all of the songs, funny faces, and noises that can generate the biggest smiles 🙂

If you are planning a studio session, hopefully these four tips on taking studio portraits with children under one year old has been helpful. Thanks!
