Outdoor Ceremony at the Santa Clara County Clerks Office

An outdoor ceremony at the Santa Clara County Clerks Office can be a simple and beautiful way to get married. The setting offers a lovely backdrop for your vows, and you can take portraits nearby after the ceremony. A little planning can help you make the most of your time and choose the right ceremony setting for the season.

Outdoor Ceremony at the Santa Clara County Clerks Office: Timing and Light

Whenever possible, choose the earliest appointment that works for you. The outdoor area has beautiful natural light, and scheduling earlier can make it easier to take portraits before the day gets too busy.

The County currently lists chapel appointments Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., so “early” may mean the first available appointment rather than sunrise. Outdoor ceremonies are weather permitting, and the County says outdoor photography requires an advance reservation. Check the latest ceremony details and photography requirements as you plan.

There are also a few good outdoor spots near the ceremony area for portraits afterward. You can keep things simple with a short set of photos nearby, or plan extra time to visit another location. Your photographer can help you choose a portrait plan that fits your schedule.

Plan Enough Photography Time

The ceremony itself is short and sweet. I’ve photographed several ceremonies at the Santa Clara County Clerk’s Office, and the ceremony portion has taken around five minutes.

If you’re hiring a professional photographer, 30 minutes is usually enough time to photograph the ceremony and take a few portraits afterward. A 60- or 90-minute session makes more sense if you want a fuller portrait experience, such as visiting additional locations or including a longer list of family group photos.

Consider the Indoor Chapel if Rain Is Possible

If you’re planning your wedding during a season when rain is possible, consider reserving the indoor chapel. It’s a beautiful setting, and in my experience the lighting works well for wedding photography.

Guest capacity is worth checking as you make plans. The County’s current indoor chapel guidelines list a limit of up to 20 guests, not including the couple and officiant. Confirm the latest rules with the Clerk-Recorder’s Office, especially if you’re inviting a larger group.

With a little planning, a ceremony at the Santa Clara County Clerk’s Office can feel relaxed, personal, and meaningful. Whether you choose the outdoor setting or the indoor chapel, a thoughtful photography timeline will leave room to enjoy the moment and capture a few portraits together.
