Sunset Beach Family Portraits In Watsonville

Fun & Candid Sunset Beach Family Portraits In Watsonville (Pajaro Dunes State Beach)

One of my favorite places for family portraits is the beach! I believe that family portraits should be fun, candid, and feel unposed. And the beach is the perfect setting for these types of portraits. Here are some examples of some recent sunset beach family portraits in Watsonville at Pajaro Dunes State Beach. As well as three things to consider when scheduling sunset beach family portraits.

For Sunset Photos, Showing Up Early Or On Time Is Important

For sunset photos, the timing is everything! And making sure that you show up at least 15 minutes before the start of the session is really important. Keep in mind that there may be traffic getting to the beach and the beach is going to be a popular place to visit. Especially on the weekend and on a Holiday. If you are running late, this will cut into the time you have for the session. And once the sun sets, there will be little to no light to take pictures.

The ideal window for the session is going to be 30-45 minutes prior to sunset. The great thing about taking sunset photos at the beach is that the horizon is typically low and so if sunset is at 6 pm, it will set over the water right at 6 pm. To find the perfect timing, I recommend using a sunset calendar.

Prepare For The Wind And Cooler Weather

Although Pajaro Dunes State Beach is the perfect location for sunset beach family portraits in Watsonville, it can get windy and cold in the evening. I would plan on bringing a coat for when you are not posing. And I would also recommend considering a contingency plan for people with long hair. For example, bringing along a brush or wearing your hair all the way up or partially up.

Ditch The Shoes And Plan On Getting Your Feet Wet!

Last but not least, I also recommend ditching the shoes and getting a little wet! The beach is the perfect location for fun and candid shots near the water. The best pictures are when you and your family are enjoying the beach together and not feeling overly posed 🙂

Hopefully these three quick tips have given you some ideas for your own family portrait session at the beach. Thanks!
