Extended Family Portraits in San Jose – Hellyer Park

One of the best times to take family portraits are when most of your family are together in the same place. Some of the most common times that this happens are weddings, graduations, holidays, and milestone birthdays. Since these moments may happen every five to ten years, I recommend scheduling an hour to take family portraits. Here are some examples of some recent extended family portraits in San Jose at Hellyer Park. As well as four useful tips to make your family portraits fun and easy.

Prior To The Session, Coordinate Your Outfits

One of the first things to consider for your family portraits are the outfits. With extended family portraits, I recommend keeping things as simple as possible. For example, choosing one color palette for the outfits. Jeans and a solid color like blue, white, or black shirt is a great idea because this is something that most people have on hand without the need to purchase a new outfit for the session. Another suggestion is to have the women wear one color and the men to wear another color. For example, the men wear white shirts and the women wear blue shirts.

Work With Your Photographer On The Best Location

Perhaps one of the most important things to plan is the location for the session. One of my favorite locations for extended family portraits in San Jose is Hellyer Park. Hellyer Park is a beautiful location and it is one of the less busy parks in San Jose. Some other things to consider when picking a location is how easy it is to get to and from the location, if it is easily accessible for people with limited mobility, and if there are amenities like restrooms if this is needed.

Make A List Of All The Groupings

To ensure that all of the groupings are photographed in the 60 minute time limit, I recommend listing out each group prior to the session. Your Photographer will typically have a good idea of what groups to take. However, I recommend double checking this with a written out list of the groups. If there are other fun or silly poses, make sure to mention these kind of poses to your photographer as well.

Plan Something Fun After The Session

Last but not least, I recommend scheduling something fun for everyone to do after the session. Since everyone is together, planning something after the session is a great way to continue spending quality time with family. This can be as simple as going to breakfast or lunch after the session. If your family portraits include younger kids, Hellyer Park is a great location for extended family portraits in San Jose because it has a great playground area for children 1 – 10 years old.
