A Few Suggestions on What to Wear For Family Portraits
Now that you have your family portrait session scheduled, here are a few suggestions on what to wear for family portraits. The great thing about family portraits is that they can be as formal or as casual as you want them to be! Here are some examples of what some of my past clients have done to coordinate their family portrait outfits 🙂
Make Sure You Are Comfortable
First and foremost, you need to be comfortable in whatever you decide to wear. During a portrait session, you will be walking, sitting, squatting. etc. While you are posing, you want to wear something that you feel comfortable doing all of these things. PRO TIP: Most sessions involve a little bit of walking. If you plan on wearing high heeled shoes, bring another paid of shoes to walk to-and-from the different locations.
Blue Jeans and Dress Shirts
A common outfit, for family portraits, are blue jeans and a collard shirt. The shirts can be shades of a specific color (blues and greens work great for outdoor portraits), or white/black. Keep in mind that whites and blacks are sometimes hard to pull detail from in pictures. This might be something that you may want or not want – depending on the photograph. For maternity sessions, I try to have moms steer clear of these colors, because we want to be able to see the shape of your baby bump 🙂
Color Combinations
Another idea is to wear a combination of colors. For example, the ladies can wear one color and the guys can wear another. Or the kids can wear one color and the adults can wear another.
Jerseys or Themed Clothes
A fun idea is to have everyone wear jerseys, a holiday themed outfit (ugly sweaters), etc. Not all of the portraits have to be in this clothing. Things like jerseys or sweatshirts can be quickly chnaged into, towards the end of the session.
Hopefully these give you some ideas on how to coordinate your outfits for family portraits. If you plan on having kids in the session, you can check out my blog post on fun family portraits with kids. Thanks!
