Studio Cake Smash Portraits In San Jose – Four Practical Tips

Your child turning one year old is a huge milestone that deserves to be celebrated. One of the best ways to do this is by having a cake smash session 🙂 Cake smash sessions can be taken outdoors or they can be taken in a studio setting. Here are a few examples of studio cake smash portraits in San Jose at my studio. As well as four practical tips to get the best out of your session.

Practice Before The Session

One of the tips that I recommend the most is to practice before the session. You can buy a practice cake at the grocery store to get them familiar with the process. Smashing a cake does not come natural to most kids; and a little practice can go a long way.

Arrive Early

I also recommend arriving to the session 10-15 minutes early. Arriving early creates a stress-free environment; it allows your child to get familiar with their surroundings; and it allows you to get everything set up before the session starts.

Bring Someone To Help

Another practical tip is to bring someone along to help grab your child’s attention. Most Photographer’s will have a few tips to grab your child’s attention. But it is more likely that they will respond to someone they are familiar with. This is especially the case if you want to be included in some of the pictures. A friend or grandparent can be near the Photographer to help get your child looking towards the camera.

Pick A Few Props That Fit Your Style

Lastly, I recommend bringing a few props. Outside of the actual cake and your child’s outfit, the most common props are balloons, a customized signage board, or some type of “one” prop. Many of these can be ordered on Etsy or Amazon. If you plan on ordering props, I recommend doing this at least one week before the session – so that everything arrives on time.

Hopefully these studio cake smash portraits in San Jose have given you a little inspiration on planning for your own session 🙂 Thanks!
