If you are planning family portraits at a redwood tree park, Redwood Grove Nature Preserve in Los Altos is a beautiful option. The towering trees create a peaceful backdrop, while the wooden features give us plenty of ways to pose. Add in soft light beneath the redwoods, and you have a wonderful setting for relaxed family photos!
Here are three reasons to consider this location, along with a few tips to help your session go smoothly.
Plan Family Portraits at a Redwood Tree Park for a Quieter Time

Redwood Grove is a popular location for family portraits. However, it is also very small. Several families and photographers can quickly make the main photo spots feel busy.
For that reason, I recommend scheduling your session on a weekday or early in the morning. These times generally give us a better chance of finding fewer people around the backgrounds we want to use. A quieter setting also makes it easier for children to settle in and have fun.

This is especially helpful in November, which is my busiest month of the year for family portraits. Many families are preparing holiday cards, so weekend sessions can mean sharing the same spots with other groups.
If your schedule allows, a weekday morning is a great choice. We can spend more time capturing your family and less time waiting for a background to open up!
Enjoy a Variety of Natural Posing Options

One of the best things about taking family portraits at a redwood tree park is having more than just trees to work with. Redwood Grove has several features that help us create variety without walking far between photos.
Tree stumps are great for sitting or standing poses when they are stable and suitable. For example, we can seat a child on a low stump while parents gather close. Changing everyone’s height helps the pose feel relaxed and connected.
The large wooden platform gives us space for a full family portrait. It also works well for smaller combinations, such as siblings together or a parent cuddling a child.
Meanwhile, the wood fencing adds texture and gives us another setting for casual standing poses. The bridge offers a lovely spot for holding hands or capturing a few walking photos.
Together, these features help us create a varied gallery while keeping the redwoods as the backdrop. We can mix smiling portraits with hugs, laughter, and little moments between family members.
Take Advantage of Soft Light Beneath the Redwoods

The large redwood trees provide open shade even in the afternoon. This is a big reason why the preserve works so well for family photography.
Open shade means we can use natural daylight without placing your family in direct sun. That softer light helps reduce harsh shadows across faces and creates flattering images. It also makes it easier to keep everyone’s eyes open comfortably!

For family portraits at a redwood tree park, I look for shaded spots where light still reaches your faces. The trees create a beautiful background, while the light keeps the attention on your expressions.
An afternoon session can still work well here. However, I recommend a weekday when possible to help minimize crowds.
