Fun Encinitas Beach Photo Shoot

Fun Encinitas Beach Photo Shoot | Britta

Encinitas, CA is one of the prettiest places in California. My wife, Brooke, and I flew out to Encinitas to hang out with family and to take some fun pictures at the beach. Here are some of the images we captured from Britta’s fun Encinitas beach photo shoot. I will also discuss the number one rule when considering pictures on the beach.

The Direction of the Sun Matters

Probably the most important thing to consider, when scheduling a beach photo shoot, is the direction of the sun. If you did not know any better, you would assume that just as long as the sun is out – this is a great time for photos on the beach. This is not the case 🙂 Unless it is really cloudy or overcast, the only times you’ll get really good beach is in the EARLY morning or in the evening. Typically, the evening works best – because most people do not want to wake up at 9 am or earlier for pictures.

So why not 12 noon?! That’s a great question 😉 At 12 noon, the sun is really high in the sky. The direction of the sun creates harsh shadows on your face – which is really unflattering for portraits. Not only does the angle of the sun matter – but also which way it is facing. A general photography rule is that your back should always be facing the sun. If the beach that you are shooting at, in the evening for example, has the sun facing you – taking pictures in the morning would work better. This was the case for the specific beach that we shot at in Encinitas. The best shots of the session came at the very end – when the sun was going down and not facing directly in their eyes 🙂
