Fun Family Portraits In Capitola

fun family portraits in capitola

I had a really great time capturing fun family portraits in Capitola of Nicole and her family. One of the things I try to do with all of my sessions is to make sure to capture fun and candid moments. Here are some of the ways I like to capture these kind of moments with families consisting of mostly kids.

Start The Session Off As Simple As Possible

At the start of most sessions, I like to keep things as simple as possible. If the portraits include a bunch of people – the easiest thing to do is to start off with a group shot of everyone. By doing this, I get the opportunity to learn everyone’s names; and we can break down the groups into smaller groups after this. At the beginning of the session, kids should be pretty engaged and this is the best time to get all of the most important pictures taken.

Gradually Add In Some Fun Poses

Once everyone has had the chance to “warm up” to the session, I like to gradually get into more “fun” poses. One of the poses that is REALLY easy is the “walking shot.” Most people find these shots to be easy because it is something that they do VERY naturally. Another reason why I like going into walking shots is because I typically will back up pretty far to capture these images. Most people feel a little uncomfortable with a camera shoved in their face 🙂 Backing up as far as possible gives families the space they need to feel comfortable.

Asking Questions Gets Genuine Reactions

Another secret that I like to use is to ask a funny question and have the kids answer them. Depending on your kid’s personality, some of the answers will be hilarious enough to get a great expression from everyone. When you look at the images from your session, I want you to remember having fun with your family. We will get some traditionally posed photos – but I believe that the 30-60 minutes spent with you and your family is also really important.
