When Should You Take Engagement Portraits?

When Should You Take Engagement Portraits | Three Suggestions

Engagement portraits are something that every couple should do. They are fun. A great way to celebrate your engagement. And they have so many different uses. One of the major questions I get is “when should you take engagement portraits?” Here are my top three suggestions on when to schedule your engagement portraits.

Take Them With Enough Time To Pick A Location And An Outfit That You Really LOVE

First and foremost, I recommend scheduling your session after you have considered a location and an outfit that you really LOVE! Your Photographer will have many suggestions on locations – but I recommend picking a location that has significance. This can be a beach location. It can be where you got engaged. Or it can be a location where you and your partner like frequenting. I recommend spending some time thinking about this – and also an outfit you really like.

Schedule The Session In Between Wedding Planning

Another suggestion I recommend is scheduling them in between all of your wedding planning. Wedding planning can be a lot to account for. And it can be really stressful. Your engagement portraits can be a well needed break and a celebration from wedding planning. Once you’ve picked a venue and booked some of your most important vendors, plan on scheduling your engagement portraits. At this point, you’ll have far less stress than you may have later on in wedding planning 🙂

As Far As Timing, Make Sure To Take Them In The Evening

Last but not least, you will want to schedule the session in the evening. The evening is the best time to take outdoor portraits 😉 At this time of the day, the light is soft and the colors are very vibrant. There is no better time than about an hour before the sun is scheduled to set. And a great resource to find the exact time the sun sets is the Sunset Calendar. I love the look and feel of portraits taken at this time of day. You can not only get really soft and flattering light – but you can get the sun kicking into some of the images.

Hopefully these are some great suggestions to get you on the way to planning your own engagement session. Of course, I would LOVE to connect with you and discuss not only engagement portraits – but also how I approach wedding photography 🙂 The best way to reach me is through the contact form on my website.
