What Are Cake Smash Portraits?

What Are Cake Smash Portraits | Julieta’s Cake Smash Session

If you are a parent, especially a new one, keeping up with the latest trends can be difficult πŸ™‚ As a father to a 4 – almost 5 year old, I am still learning myself! Perhaps the most important milestone of being a parent is your child turning one year old. And one of the funnest things about your child turning one is throwing a party! Recently, cake smash portraits have become really popular. In the next few paragraphs, I will briefly explain what are cake smash portraits. And three tips for scheduling your own cake smash portraits πŸ™‚

With Cake Smash Portraits, Timing Is Everything!

First and foremost, you will want to schedule the session when your child is at their very best πŸ™‚ You will know your child’s schedule better than the Photographer – but scheduling the session a little after their nap time is usually a good starting point. For the images, we will want to have your child at their most energetic and happy moment πŸ™‚

Also, the length of the session is really important. For children around one year old, a 30 minute session is the perfect amount of time.

Plan The Session A Couple Of Weeks Before Their Actual Birthday

Secondly, I recommend scheduling the session around two weeks before their actual birthday. This is important for a couple of reasons. For example, if the session needs to be rescheduled because of bad weather or because your kid gets sick – you will have time to reschedule before their birthday. Also, scheduling the session a couple of weeks before their birthday will ensure that you can use some of the images for their birthday party. I love when families use the images from their cake smash session to decorate their party. The images can also be used to post on social media. And I know how important that is πŸ™‚

Introduce Them To The Idea Of Smashing A Cake Before The Session

Lastly, I recommend finding a way to introduce your child to smashing a cake before the actual session. In my experience, most one year olds get a little confused about smashing things. It is counter intuitive to everything you have taught them πŸ™‚ I have also come to find that most one year old kids have never tasted sugar. Introducing them to the idea of smashing a cake is a good way to prepare them. If you are able to purchase a test cake, or even show them a video of a cake smash – this will increase the likelihood of capturing great images πŸ™‚

Cake smash sessions are adorable! Hopefully these 3 pointers have given you a starting point to the question of what are cake smash portraits πŸ™‚ If you are looking to schedule a session, I would love to connect with you!
