I believe that family portraits should be fun and candid! Whether you are a family with younger kids or if your family is all adults – family portraits should be a good time. Here are some of the fun images we captured of Anais’ family portraits at Cuesta Park! As well as my recommendation of whether 30 or 60 minutes is enough time for you and your family.

30 Minutes Is Great For Younger Families And Families of 3-4 People

In my experience, a 30 minute session is perfect for families with children that are 3 and under. And it is also great for families of 3-4 people. Most children can remain really engaged in a session lasting just 30 minutes. And this amount of time is enough time to get all of the different groupings for families of 3 or 4 people. I love getting images of the entire group and then individual images of just the kids 🙂 If Mom & Dad are up to it, I also like to get pictures of just you and your partner.

60 Minutes Is Recommended For Extended Family Portraits

If you plan on including extended family into the session, I recommend a 60 minute session. For example, if you plan on having Grandma & Grandpa there for some images – 60 minutes is the perfect amount of time. I also really like when there are more people at the session to help capture fun and genuine expressions from the kids. When we are posing just your immediate family, I like to have everyone else over my shoulder dancing and making funny faces and noises. This usually gets kids laughing for the images!

If You Plan On Using Props Or Changing Outfits, Go With 60 Minutes

Lastly, if you plan on incorporating props or changing outfits, I recommend the 60 minute session. We could probably squeeze in all of the images in a little over 30 minutes – but not rushing through the different poses and ideas is important. Having a laid back, fun, and relaxed session is more enjoyable than rushing through all of the different props, poses, and outfit changes 🙂
