5 Things To Ask Your Family Portrait Photographer

5 Things To Ask Your Family Portrait Photographer Before Booking A Session

Family Portraits are one of the most important things you can do as a family. While in the moment, it may not seem all that important. But photography is something that grows in value over time. I definitely recommend taking family portraits at least once a year. And if possible sticking with the same Photographer โ€“ so that a relationship is formed ๐Ÿ™‚ If you have never hired a Photographer, for family portraits, here are 5 things to ask your family portrait Photographer.

What Is Your Style?

One of the most important things to consider, when hiring a Photographer, is their style. While it may seem that every Photographer essentially does the same thing, they each have their own style. Having them explain this to you can really be helpful. And if they have a website, you should be able to notice their style in the types of images they have on their website.

For example, some Photographers shoot in more of a posed style. While another Photographer captures more candid images. How they edit their images is also something youโ€™ll want to consider.

What Does My Session Include?

What is included in your session will vary from one Photographer to the next. If you have worked with another Photographer in the past, do not assume that a new Photographer will operate like the other one did. Finding out how many images you will receive and if there are any extra fees is a good place to start.

For example, if you have a large group of 15 people, most Photographers will charge an extra fee based off of the total amount of people. And everything should be spelled out in a contract that is submitted before the session takes place.

Which Locations Do Your Recommend?

If you are new to family portraits, you may not have an idea of where to take your pictures. Touching bases with the Photographer on this is important. Most Photographers will have a list of 5-10 places they recommend for family portraits. If you have a preference, make sure to discuss this before booking the session. For example, if you planned on having a beach session, it may need to be coordinated before choosing a date. While I love taking pictures at the beach, it requires additional travel time in between sessions. So choosing a date and time for these types of sessions is crucial.

How Long Does It Take To Get My Images Back?

Another thing to be on the same page as your Photographer with is how long it takes to get your images. This is something that will typically be included in your contract. And one of the questions Photographers hate having to answer, after a session is completed, is if the pictures are ready ๐Ÿ™‚

Depending on the time of the year, a busy Photographer may be editing several thousands of images per week. And trust me โ€“ we want to get you your images as soon as possible ๐Ÿ˜‰

This is Our First Time Taking Family Portraits โ€“ Will You Help Us With Posing?

Lastly, to feel a little more comfortable with the process, it is always good to ask about posing. Along with the Photographers style, you should be able to gauge how they pose families by looking at their website. Looking and feeling comfortable in your images is always important ๐Ÿ™‚

Hopefully these 5 things to ask your family portrait Photographer have been helpful. If you are considering family portraits and have any additional questions, I would love to hear from you. Thanks!
