Vasona Park (Los Gatos) is one of my favorite places for family portraits. If I am working with a new family, this is usually my go-to place to schedule the session. Here are some of the family pictures at Vasona Park with Liz and her family. As well as six reasons why Vasona Park is a great place for portraits 🙂

1. There Is A Variety of Places For Portraits

One of the things I like the most about Vasona Park is that there are unlimited places to take portraits. It really has everything all in one place 🙂 From the rail road tracks, the beautiful bridge, large grass fields, and several different bodies of water – it makes for a great location. For a 60 minute session, we can usually make it to 4 or 5 different places within the park.

2. Shade Means You Can Take Pictures At Any Time of Day

When it comes to great family portraits, having good lighting is important. The best time for outdoor portraits is always going to be in the EARLY morning (before most people wake up) and in the evening. If your session is scheduled at a time that is not the morning or evening – having shaded areas is necessary. Vasona Park has a lot of tall trees that can create plenty of shade for the session. And shade creates soft and flattering light for portraits.

3. The Restrooms And Other Amenities

Another reason why I love shooting family pictures at Vasona Park is because of the different amenities. Restrooms can come in handy when working with families with kids 😉 And there are also water fountains, trash cans, and other convenient amenities spread out throughout the park.

4. There Is A Lot of Space

One of the other reasons why I LOVE scheduling sessions at Vasona Park is because there is a lot of space. In my experience, people feel the most comfortable when there is some space between them and the Photographer. This is especially the case when working with kids 🙂 Along with there being distance between you and the Photographer, kids are at there best when they can run around! Letting them run around creates natural opportunities for smiles 🙂

5. Plenty of Posing Options Using Trees, Rocks and Logs

A great thing about scheduling your family pictures at Vasona Park is that there are a TON of things to use for posing. Places like the beach are very limited in what you can use for posing. But Vasona Park has a variety of rocks, logs, trees, etc. to use for posing.

6. There Are Fun Things To Do After The Session

Last but not least, there are things to do at the park after the session. In my experience, giving children incentives can work really well. During normal times (non-Covid-19 times) there is a miniature train, a carousel, several playgrounds, and a snack bar that can be used as incentives for after the session 🙂 While I will do everything I can to keep the session fun for everyone, the promise of an ice cream at the end of the session is something for kids to look forward to!
