Great headshots can be taken at an indoor or outdoor setting. It really depends on the type of look you are going for. For a consistent look, among a group of employees, I recommend indoor headshots. In this case, each of the headshots can easily be repeated. But outdoor headshots can come out great as well. One of the first things to consider is where to take them. Here are a few ideas on where to take an outdoor headshot.

You MUST Have Shade

One of the things you must have for outdoor headshots is shade. Shade ensures that the lighting on your face is soft and flattering. Most parks are great locations because of this reason. For Lynsie’s headshots we scheduled them at a park near her home.

A Background That Is Not Too Close

With shade being the first ingredient for a GREAT outdoor headshot, the background would be the second. Pretty much any background will work – but the best headshots are those where the background is a good distance from the subject. The further the background, the better. A background that is far away creates an image where you are sharp and in focus and the background is blurry. This is a great look for portraits and especially headshots.

A Place Without A Lot Of Wind

Lastly, scheduling the session at a location with little or no wind is ideal. Wind is not something that can be easily controlled. However, places like lakes or the ocean may not be the best place for headshots. The great thing is that stray hairs can easily be edited out of the final images 🙂
