Sunset is the VERY best time to take outdoor portraits! The light is soft and flattering and the color of the light is the most vibrant of the entire day. Here are some of the sunset engagement portraits at Shoreline Lake Park/Rengstorf House of Jennifer and Aaron. As well as a few tips on how to prepare for engagement portraits 🙂

What To Bring To The Session

For engagement portraits, you do not need to bring much. But there are a couple of useful items that can go a long way. One of the things I recommend bringing the most is a comfortable pair of shoes to change into as we walk from on spot to the next. This is especially useful if you plan on wearing heels.

I also recommend bringing a brush and small handheld mirror to be able to make quick adjustments to your hair and makeup. In the evening, it tends to get windy and so managing your hair and makeup can be particularly important. If you have a close friend that you can bring to the session, they can be really useful in pointing out any stray hairs or adjustments to your outfit 😉

Lastly, make sure to bring some water and a small snack. Since the session will last between 90 minutes and 2 hours, you may want to snack on something before the end of the session 😉

Don’t Stress On Posing

I believe that the best images are those that are fun and candid. Every Photographer has their own style, but I prefer candid poses over poses that can feel stiff and unnatural. The way that I like to do this is by keeping the focus on you and your partner. In my experience, when you are interacting with each other, this is when the images look unposed.

There are several ways that we can do this – but my favorite way to do this is by keeping things conversational. I may ask a question or have you tell your partner something. The answers to the questions and the response by your partner are what I like to capture during the session.

If you have never taken professional portraits before, there is no need to stress. No practice is needed to be able to take really fun images; and it is a lot easier than most people think. My main goal is to capture you and your partner having fun with each other and creating awkward poses is not a part of the game plan 🙂

We Will Have Plenty of Time For All of Your Ideas

One of the main differences between engagement portraits and any other portrait session is the amount of time. Engagement portraits typically last between 90 minutes and 2 hours. This is more than enough time to incorporate any and all of the ideas you have for the session. And part way through the session, we can take a short break to change into your second outfit. I will have a bunch of ideas for the session, but make sure to let me know if there are any ideas or poses that you would like to incorporate. Some of the ideas I get from clients I will end up using for future sessions 🙂
