5 Ways To Have Fun Taking Family Pictures

How To Have Fun Taking Family Pictures

I believe that family pictures should be fun, candid, and should feel as natural as possible. Your best pictures will happen when you’re focused on each other and not the camera 😉 Here are three ways you can have fun taking family pictures during your next session!

Ask Questions

Perhaps the number one way that I get everyone to have fun taking family pictures is by asking you questions. I may ask you to tell me something about another one of your family members. Or I may give you a multiple choice question and have you answer it. In my experience, when I get you and your family interacting with each other, this loosens you up and the pictures are fun and genuine… as long as you come with an open mind and are willing to have a little fun, the results are usually great!

Bring A Fun Outfit To Change Into

Another way to have fun taking family pictures is to bring a fun outfit to change into. If you all love a sports team, wearing these jerseys is a simple way to do this!

Capture Movement By Walking, Singing, Bumping

Another way that I get you and your family to have fun taking family pictures is to do simple walking shots. This tends to work really well for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I like to give you a lot of space. And in my experience, people feel more comfortable when their Photographer is a distance away from them.

Secondly, pictures feel a lot more natural when you are not standing in one spot. I LOVE capturing movement as much as possible when taking pictures. Walking shots can be even more fun by picking a song and singing 🙂 It can be as simple as the “happy birthday” song. If you are willing to be a little silly, it can create some fun images!

Another great way to get fun pictures is by doing some “hip bumps.” I may ask you to hip bump the person next to you; and give you a number from 1-10 on how hard to do it. Depending on who is standing next to you, this can be really fun 🙂

Recreate An Image From Many Years Ago

Last but not least, another genius way to have fun taking family pictures is to recreate an image from many years ago. Depending on how old you are, there is a good chance that you’ve taken some funny images – that may have seamed great at the time, but didn’t age well 🙂

Hopefully these ideas have given you a glimpse into how I like to photograph families. Most sessions are much easier than you think and I try to make it as fun as possible. Thanks!
