Is A White Dress Good For Maternity Portraits?

Frequently Asked Questions: Is A White Dress Good For Maternity Portraits?

When you are preparing for your maternity portraits, one of the things to consider is what to wear. If you have never taken maternity portraits, you may not know where to even start! Here are a few things to think about when considering the question, “is a white dress good for maternity portraits?”

Yes – But Consider The Time of Day

In general, white can be a difficult color to photograph for maternity portraits. This is similar to the difficulties in photographing maternity portraits with black outfits. Both of these colors tend to blend in with the highlights and the shadows of an image. In some situations, this can work in your favor. If you happen to have a few extra pounds and you want to hide some of this, black is a great color for this purpose. However, with maternity portraits, you want to show off your “baby bump.” Wearing white and black outfits can make this a little hard. But it is not impossible 🙂

If you have a white dress that you are REALLY in love with, there are a few things you can do to make sure your images turn out great. Firstly, try to wear a dress that has texture to it. Texture can add just enough contrast to show off your baby bump 😉 Secondly and more importantly, schedule your session at a time of day where there is even lighting. Sessions that are scheduled in the early morning or evening, have soft and flattering light. And at these times of day, the lighting will not contrast with a white dress.

If There is Time, Select a Second Dress

Secondly, if you are not sure if a white dress is good for maternity portraits, bring a second dress. If your session is at least 60 minutes long, this should be enough time to QUICKLY change outfits. Keep in mind that the time it takes to change will take away from the session time. And you will also need to schedule the session at a location that has a restroom close by. Having a second outfit is great to have a little more variety in your images. And it is also great if you are indecisive on picking just one outfit.

Choose Comfort and Confident Over Color

Last but not least, whatever you wear just make sure you are comfortable and confident. If you are comfortable and confident, it will show in the images. That can be in a white dress. A blue dress. Or in jeans and a t-shirt.

So, is a white dress good for maternity portraits? Yes 🙂 Just make sure to consider the time of day your session is scheduled. Also consider bringing a second outfit. And whatever outfit you choose, make sure your are comfortable and confident in it! Thanks!
