How To Prepare For Corporate Headshots – Four Tips

How To Prepare For Corporate Headshots

Having a GREAT headshot is one of the best ways you can showcase you and your brand. I recommend taking a new headshot every couple of years. Here are four tips on how to prepare for corporate headshots.

Positive Self Talk

One of the best pieces of advice I can give to anyone trying to prepare for corporate headshots is to have positive self talk. Chances are, we have all taken a really bad picture at one time or another. But this does not mean you are not capable of taking a REALLY nice portrait that you can be proud of. Coming into your session, think and speak positively and it will reflect in the final images 😉 Some of the worst phrases Photographers hate to hear from clients are, “I take bad pictures,” “I hate having my picture taken,” etc.

Try To Schedule Your Headshots A Couple of Days After A Haircut

Tip number 2 on how to prepare for corporate headshots is to schedule the session as close to a visit to the barber shop or hair salon. Having your hair well manicured will give you confidence that you look your very best for the session 🙂

If you are not able to get your hair styled before the session, keep in mind that your Photographer can make small adjustments. Stray and misplaced hairs can all be easily edited on the back end. But it is the best idea to have your hair as close to “perfect” as possible.

Understand The “Look” You Are Going For Beforehand

Another way to prepare for your corporate headshots is to understand the “look” you are going for. Keep in mind that your professional headshot is not an employee badge picture. And it is definitely not a mug shot 🙂 Your new headshot will be a first impression of sorts for potential clients and customers. I recommend a confident and approachable look to corporate headshots. You can smile with teeth. You can also smile showing no teeth. But I recommend giving more than a blank stare 🙂

Use Other People’s Headshots For Ideas But Do Not Try To Replicate Someone Else’s Look

How To Prepare For Corporate Headshots

When someone takes a look at your headshot, you want them to get a quick glimpse into who you are. If you have never taken a headshot, I recommend taking a look at your company’s website or other general headshots online. These will give you a good idea of what your headshot should look like. I caution clients against trying to replicate someone else’s look. I once had a client bring in pictures of Beyonce, Victoria Backham, and Kendall Jenner as examples of what she wanted to have the headshots look like. Although the client was good looking, using these three women as examples is not the best idea.

PRO TIP: visit your Photographer’s website to see examples of the types of headshots they take. If most of their images have a different look and feel to them, it may not be a great fit. One of the worst things you can do as a client is to hire a Photographer and have them take images in a style that they do not typically shoot in.

If you are planning on updating your headshot, hopefully these four tips on how to prepare for corporate headshots has been helpful 😉
