Evening Family Portraits at Alum Rock Park

What to Expect During Evening Family Portraits at Alum Rock Park

Planning evening family portraits at Alum Rock Park and wondering how the session will go? You do not need to arrive knowing how to pose or how to get your children smiling. That is where I come in! My goal is to guide your family through a relaxed session with plenty of variety, movement, and laughter.

Whether you take portraits every year or this is your first session, I want everyone to feel comfortable and confident. Here is how I keep the session flowing while capturing the connections that make your family unique.

Finding Poses That Feel Natural for Your Family

Every family has different personalities, so I like to try a mix of poses. During your session, we may take standing and sitting portraits, along with stationary, moving, and candid pictures.

For example, we might start with everyone standing close together. Next, I may ask you to walk hand in hand or have the kids give their parents a big hug. Sitting together can also help younger children settle in and feel comfortable.

This variety gives us several ways to find what works. A child who feels shy while standing still may light up when we add movement. Meanwhile, parents can relax knowing I will guide them on where to stand, what to do with their hands, and how to interact.

You do not have to make every pose work. We can simply try something else!

Capture All the Family Combinations

The full family portrait is important, but it is only part of the story. I also like to photograph the different relationships within your family.

Throughout the session, I work through combinations such as:

  • The entire family together.
  • Siblings with each other.
  • The kids with Mom and the kids with Dad.
  • Each child with each parent.
  • Individual portraits of the children.
  • Just Mom and Dad.

Of course, we will adjust these groupings to fit your family. If there is a particular combination you love, let me know beforehand.

During evening family portraits at Alum Rock Park, I may also change the order based on how the kids are doing. If one child needs a short break, that can be a great opportunity for pictures of another child or a few portraits of the parents.

Keep the Session Moving Between Different Spots

For a typical 60-minute session, we may take pictures in four to seven different spots within a location. The exact number depends on the light, the pace of the session, and your family’s needs.

In my experience, moving between spots helps everyone stay engaged. It also creates natural breaks from posing. We can chat along the way, and children have a chance to reset before the next round of pictures.

These conversations help the session feel more like spending time together. Often, everyone becomes more comfortable as we go.

If anyone has accessibility needs or finds walking, standing, or sitting difficult, please let me know beforehand. We can plan a comfortable route and choose poses that work for everyone. A successful session does not depend on covering lots of ground.

Stay Flexible and Find What Works for Your Family

I like to begin each session with ideas while keeping an open mind about how we use them. Each family is different, and what works beautifully for one may feel awkward for another.

A family that takes portraits regularly may settle into the session quickly. A family taking pictures for the first time might need more guidance and a little extra time to warm up. Both are completely normal.

As we go, I make adjustments based on your family’s reactions. If a stationary pose feels stiff, we can add movement. If a child wants to stay close to a parent, we can build a picture around that connection.

Keeping an open mind during evening family portraits at Alum Rock Park gives us room to discover what feels natural for you.

Keep Things Lighthearted and Silly

Some of the best smiles happen between the more traditional portraits. A silly question, a playful hug, or an exaggerated whisper can get the whole family laughing.

I encourage parents to join in! When children see you having fun, they often feel more comfortable doing the same. Keep smiling, stay connected, and let me help guide their attention.

There is room for wiggles, giggles, and unexpected moments. Those little interactions can become some of your favorite pictures.
